Black History Month
Black History Month began with an assembly for each year group led by Miss Hudson. The assembly focussed on the origins of Black History Month both in the USA and the UK. The children learnt that it is marked in the US in February and in the UK in October, and that Akyaaba Addai Sebo, a Ghanian officer in the Greater London Council, founded Black History Month in the UK in 1987. Through studying the lives of significant black people in history and modern day the children have been able to 'Dig Deeper, Look Closer [and] Think Bigger'. Across the school, children have been reading, writing and debating about the lives and contributions of influential black people from history and the present day, including: Mo Farah, Maya Angelou, Mary Seacole, Mae Jemison, Benjamin Zephaniah, Pablo Fanque, Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman.
The children now have a greater understanding about the origins of Black History Month and knowledge about the contributions significant black people have made to the world.
