Classification in Year 6

In Year 6, we are currently studying classification. Our first objective was to learn how to sort organisms into different categories based on similar characteristics, including how many legs they have, their colour patterns, whether or not they have fur and more.

Then, we used a classification key (created by scientist Carl Linneaus) to sort animals into particular species (organisms that all share the same characteristics).

Finally, we used our classification key to act as biologists and classify plants and trees into the following category: flowering plant, deciduous tree, conifer tree, evergreen tree, moss or fern. Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we learn what conditions bacteria grow in (you may be seeing some slightly mouldy bread).
